Two different systems, one single opportunity to inspect them thoroughly: rudder pintle clearance and sea valve tightness remain among the costliest items to postpone to the next dry dock.
Operational Explanation
The rudder and its bushes/pintles, together with sea chests and sea inlet/discharge valves (sea valves), are among the systems that necessarily require dry dock access for a complete inspection: rudder clearances cannot be precisely measured afloat, and the inside of sea chests cannot be inspected without complete draining.
Sea chest gratings are also an environmental control point: their configuration and the presence of anti-fouling systems influence the risk of introducing invasive aquatic species, a topic of growing international regulatory attention.

Procedure / How to Complete It
- Measure rudder pintle and bush clearance, comparing it with the Classification Society's permissible limits.
- Visually inspect the condition of the rudder, blade and structural welds for signs of corrosion or damage.
- Open and inspect the inside of sea chests, checking the condition of gratings and the absence of obstructions or significant biofouling.
- Verify the tightness and operation of sea valves, replacing worn components.
- Photograph the internal condition of sea chests, often the only opportunity for direct inspection until the next dry dock.
