Rudder and Sea Chests (Sea Chests and Sea Valves)

Two different systems, one single opportunity to inspect them thoroughly: rudder pintle clearance and sea valve tightness remain among the costliest items to postpone to the next dry dock.

Operational Explanation

The rudder and its bushes/pintles, together with sea chests and sea inlet/discharge valves (sea valves), are among the systems that necessarily require dry dock access for a complete inspection: rudder clearances cannot be precisely measured afloat, and the inside of sea chests cannot be inspected without complete draining.

Sea chest gratings are also an environmental control point: their configuration and the presence of anti-fouling systems influence the risk of introducing invasive aquatic species, a topic of growing international regulatory attention.

  2. Visually inspect the condition of the rudder, blade and structural welds for signs of corrosion or damage.
  3. Open and inspect the inside of sea chests, checking the condition of gratings and the absence of obstructions or significant biofouling.
  4. Verify the tightness and operation of sea valves, replacing worn components.
  5. Photograph the internal condition of sea chests, often the only opportunity for direct inspection until the next dry dock.

Example of inspection: rudder pintle clearance measured within permissible limits, starboard sea chest inspected with grating in good condition but moderate biofouling present, removed and documented before reclosing.

Real Cases

Sea valve malfunctions during critical operations (e.g. inability to isolate a sea chest for an emergency intervention) have in several cases been traced to insufficient inspection during the previous dry dock, with the implicit assumption that the component would remain functional until the next survey without an interim check.

PSC Observations

Inspection of the rudder and sea chests is not typically subject to direct PSC verification (it would require access not available afloat), but a steering system malfunction underway is subject to immediate and serious verification.
